Review of Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) by Daniel R — 29 May 2013
I really REALLY liked this movie. It's a quirky and witty, unpredictable indie comedy that had me completely entertained from start to finish. Plus, while some people probably hated the ending, I loved the way this movie ended. I would've liked a little less open endedness but to avoid spoilers I'll stop there. Aubrey Plaza was great. At first I wasn't sure if I was going to love her character but after 10 minutes in, she won me over. She also handled the leading role really well. Jake Johnson and Karan Soni where hilarious and I really enjoyed the dynamic between the three characters. Mark Duplass was fantastic as Kenneth, I couldn't decide if he was genuine, completely nuts or a little of both but either way I wanted to root for him. It's funny, fast paced and never boring. At only 86 minutes long, it jam packs a lot; a little sci-fi, a little romance and a lot of comedy. It's totally worth the watch.
Fun fact: This movie is based on an actual newspaper ad from 1997.
