Review of Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) by Jillian L — 16 May 2014
I was looking forward to this one because I really like Aubrey Plaza and Jake Johnson. They didn't disappoint, and the movie overall didn't either. I thought it was really fun and somehow managed to make a movie that combines elements of comedy, romance, and sci-fi all in one.
I'm used to seeing Aubrey Plaza as really dry/monotone April on Parks and Rec, so it was fun seeing her still be dry, but also have a softer side. Along the same lines, I'm used to seeing Jake Johnson be an adorable loser on New Girl, and his character in this kind of a dick, so it was fun seeing him play that.
Mark Duplass also stands out as Kenneth, the hopeful time traveler. The writing is quick, funny, and really well paced. There are some subplots that go unresolved in favor of the main storyline, but overall I really enjoyed this.
