Review of Safe House (2012) by Chelsea M — 03 Sep 2012
There are few things as satisfying as when you go see a movie and it meets your expectations. Granted I didn't think this was going to be an absolute jaw-dropper, but I liked the pairing of Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, and the trailer was appealing to my love of movies about the tangling of the government web and my love of spy movies, so the movie stew was already smelling great to me.
Everyone delivers here. The action is satisfying, the suspense keeps you interested until the end and both Reynolds and Washington (although we've come to expect it from him in roles like this) are great in their "underdog bringing down the big baddies" roles.
You do want to root for them, partially because the plot dictates it and partially because these guys are just likable. There's not as many surprises as I'd like but the ride is a fun one and it ticks all of the boxes for this genre somewhere in the good to great range.
Not exceptional, but like I said, it's the visual equivalent of a really good cheeseburger, or pizza, if that's more your style.
