Review of Safe Haven (2013) by Dov D — 21 Sep 2013
Safe Haven is my favorite Nicholas Sparks adaptation to film yet; however, that doesn't mean that it's a good movie at all... Honestly, I was pretty sold on the script up until the last ten minutes.
.. I thought the first twist was solid and not overdone... But then the final twist happened. So ridiculous, on every level. Sparks M. Night Shyamalaned this script, meaning he added a twist for the sake of having a twist.
All it did was take away from the message and add over-the-top melodrama to the over-wise adequate ending. The acting was hit or miss, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt because of how hot Julianne Hough was.
Bottom line, this film is terrible, but bearable through the majority of it. If you're a Nicholas Sparks fan, you'll love it, otherwise, don't bother.
