Review of Safe (1993) by Max W — 01 Jul 2007
This was not as good as I'd hoped. The Village Voice said Julianne Moore's performance in this was the definitive acting performance of the 90's. I didn't really think so -- in fact, I think I've liked her more in everything else she's done.
It was interesting enough, but a little pretentious in its direction -- I just didn't want to sit there and wait through the 30-second holds on seemingly nothing. If there's detail in a shot, there is a better way to show it than by placing the camera there and letting that be it.
It made some interesting points though about the victimization of society and protecting ourselves from the evil things of this world that pollute our "safe space." Hmm. Glad I saw it, worth discussing, but not much else.
