Review of Safe (1993) by Travis B — 14 Dec 2014
Picked this one out as a hard to find piece with an added bonus of an early Julianne Moore performance. She doesn't disappoint; plays the part well. But don't let the Village Voice review on the poster fool you, they named as ONE of the best films of the decade and that was in 1999.
It's just what you would expect of a movie that attempts to depict 1987 culture from the scope of 1995. A lot of ambient synthesizers,.
It leaves a drab, bleak feeling on your mind when you leave it. It all builds up to something that never happens.
There's all of the paranoia of a good thriller without any of the thrill. Sort of a view from hypochondriacs anonymous cult and what I imagine to be one of the earlier cultural instances of misusing the word "chemical" to mean "bad thing", much to the chagrin of chemists everywhere.
