Review of Sadko (1994) by Stephen P — 18 May 2012
This DVD of Rimsky-Korsakov's epic 3 hour hour opera Sadko is a sumptuous treat for both your eyes and ears. The score is given a heart-felt rendition under Gergiev that truly captures the magical qualities of the music.
(such as the use of the Harp when Sadko descends to the underwater palace of the Sea Princess Volkhova). Faultless vocal performances from the Kirov Opera, particular praise to the 2 leads of Galusin & Tsidipova.
The Armenian singer Grigorian sings the 'hit' tune from the opera as the Indian merchant.
