Review of Saboteur (1942) by Amanda B — 21 Apr 2008
Saboteur is the first Hitchcock film that I didn't care for. This may be due to the fact that I've seen some of the master's best work and I can't help compare everything to near perfection.
Even when I try to to view this film without any preconcieved notions, the lack of urgency of Saboteur cannot be ignored. Hitchcock may have been set up to fail here in that the screenplay is weak and the cast is not full of Acadamy Award winners, but he must share in some of the blame as the director.
The climatic ending does pick the film up a bit, but it can't overcome a pretty boring and uneventful setup.
