Review of Sabotage (2014) by Devin F — 15 Oct 2014
As it's well paced in action, Sabotage suffers relentlessly from an undying priority based around an underwritten script by Skip Woods and a less marvellous direction by David Ayer. This time around Sabotage lacks the documentary style that was used for Ayer's last police force movie 'End of Watch.' The cops are now aside as Ayer directs his recent flick which is a movie about cast of DEA agents, led by Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger may be in his elder hood, but he makes another movie that corresponds with his earlier successes ( except 'Batman & Robin' ). The other fine performer is Olivia Williams ( Peter Pan ), who brings a bit of decency to the movie's lazy plot.
Sabotage follows Schwarzenegger's John Breacher ( sounds like author Lee Child's 'Jack Reacher! ), an elderly DEA agent and team leader who leads a group of professional, but silly DEA agents to bust a cartel. So away they go and bust it up with a big shootout, predictably believing the job's a success, until one of their own is killed. I could explain more but it's just awkwardly difficult, I'll skip forward: each of the guys one by one gets killed off by an unknown killer and threat, which leads Breacher to joining sides with female homicide detective, for an investigation. She is played by Williams.
The movie would have been better off if it were a buddy-cop movie with Schwarzenegger and Williams as the two leads. The other cast members deliver non-stop use of swear words that the script is completely overwritten with and with Schwarzenegger and William's teaming up, it starts to fade away quite rapidly. There's an amazing action sequence that occurs at the end with Schwarzenegger and his 'trigger finger of justice.' After his recent movies: The Last Stand and Escape Plan, and now Sabotage, Schwarzenegger is definitely finding his comeback as an iconic screen legend!
