Review of Ryan's Daughter (1970) by Kenneth B — 20 Jul 2008
I caught this one one TCM tonight. Set during WW1 Rosy is in a stale marriage and thus starts an affair with a English hero soldier. An event throws the village into turmoil and Robert Mitchum's Charles Shaughnessy has decisions to make.
It is more than a little quirky at times but it is an epic story and never ventures into tedium. It harks back to the epic romances of the 1930's and 1940's. Mitchum is nicely understated and Sarah Miles is likeable the pivotal role. It could have gone the other way. It is important to the overall picture that the audience can empathise with a young girl who has essentially just made a few bad decisions at an ealy stage of her life. Overall it is a thought provoking film.
