Review of RV (2006) by Luke N — 18 Nov 2013
Of all the terrible misfires made by the once-great Robin Williams, this is probably the worst one. The first and ONLY time I watched this, was on the way home from Year 11 camp, and pretty much the entire coach was silenced by how fucking painful it was.
It was so terrible that it made what we watched afterwards - 'Mr. Deeds' - seem like a comical masterpiece. I went on to hire 'Mr. Deeds' a few months later, thinking, all of a sudden, that it was one of Sandler's best .
.. only to learn how low my expectations had sunk after watching 'RV'. I mean FUCK, if you're gonna rip off a comedy classic - 'National Lampoon's Vacation' - can't you at least be funny about it? Apparently not, because the only funny thing about this film was that Robin Williams was able to show his face again after the premier.
Not one single moment made me laugh. Not one single moment made me care. But every single moment made me want to throw the fucking tape out the window and scream: "How about some sing-alongs!! I'll fucking start!!!".
It's one of those modern-family stories, where the dad is a complete nerd, detached from his pretty wife, his generic son, and his rebellious teenage daughter, and throughout their "emotional" journeys, they come to love each other.
How fucking original. And yet they can't even pull that old trick off, because the changes that bind the family together come the fuck out of nowhere. All of a sudden, they all stick up for their father when just two minutes ago they were complaining that he was "like, the most lamest dude ever".
What a shit movie. Poor Robin Williams.
