Review of Rust and Bone (2012) by Nanping Y — 14 Jan 2013
Arguably there are films, movies, and cinema, I suppose. I must say I love all three types of work. There is a very dear part of me that prefers "cinema." I believe Rust and Bone embodies the qualities that define that word.
It has an incredible ability to portray a disheartening main character in a light that truly makes you want to learn more. To understand. As this journey begins, in the back of your mind you're wondering how, when, where, and why this girl is going to come into his life-- will she be able to change him? When we witness them revealing life to one another; its uniquely different, bold, and heroic.
There are moments in this movie where their bond is so evident that I got goosebumps watching them face odds together. The photography of the film really dabbles in the digital realm; forcing shot composition by zooming in on the image, static-y slow motion, closeups, it all just add to a realm of reality untouched by most films.
Performances are so well thought out-- it nevers remains a question theres two humans struggling to find themselves in front of you. The ending of the film is one of pure adrenaline and genius. The people who are responsible for Rust and Bone are craftsmen at the height of their ability.
I thought it was a great theatrical experience which offered much reflection.
