Review of Rust and Bone (2012) by Joel M — 23 Dec 2013
"Rust and Bone" sure had its rusty moments, make no bones about it. Marion Cotillard stars as Stephanie, a killer whale trainer, who tragically loses her legs during one of the shows of the whale theme park she performs at. Matthias Schoenaerts co-stars as Alain, a financially-struggling single father to a young boy who leaves Belgium to Antibes to live with his sister. Alain meets Stephanie before her accident at a bar where he is the bouncer at. After Stephanie's tragedy, the two grow closer together even though Alain still wants to get his bone on with the ladies. Writer-Director Jacques Audiard's orchestration of the film did not have me having a whale of a time, it seemed stagnant at times and very uneven. His rusty screenplay also needed a bit of an entertainment polish. Nevertheless, Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenarts' riveting starring performances is what kept "Rust and Bone" from drowning. If you love "Rust and Bone" I have a bone to pick with you; but I say go see it anyways if it's your last rustort, I mean resort.
*** Average.
