Review of Rust and Bone (2012) by Ana B — 30 Mar 2014
French-Belgian melodrama telling us the love story of Stephanie and Alain: He is a drifter that tries to settle down with his young son in his sister's house, he is also an underground boxer. Stephanie is a killer whale trainer that has just had her two legs amputated after a tragic accident at work. Despite coming from completely different worlds they bond and they start to develop a strong friendship that end up being something more, but sadness and misfortune interfere testing their trust in each other, can Ali develop a meaningful relationship with anybody, including his son and his sister? Can Stephanie embrace life after loosing both her legs?
An elegant romantic drama that shines for its simplicity and for its nakedness, there aren't any embellishments, nor hiding the sometimes ugly truth of human nature. It is a film that evaluates what needs and love are, and how the lines between them are often blurred. Very powerful stuff and performances for a film that is so unpretentious and easygoing.
