Review of Russian Dolls (2005) by Benjamin F — 03 Oct 2007
Upon writing this, it's been over two years since I last watched L'Auberge Espangole. I'll have to watch it again soon and review it, but going on overall feeling, I think I enjoyed Russian Dolls more, overall.
L'Auberge was an enjoyable European college-age romp with good, realistic writing, a strong cast, and solid themes of friendship. Russian Dolls feels like it has a lot more substance than simply enjoying spending time with its characters, though.
And I probably sympathize with its characters a little more this time around, now past my undergraduate years, not having really had similar experiences to those in L'Auberge at all in my college years.
The character growth was nice to see, as well. Probably best they not make another sequel, though. I can't see another being able to match this. All the writing on relationships though, it's very honest and realistic, and I always appreciate that in a film.
