Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Richard L — 29 Dec 2007
It's easy to dismiss RUSSIAN ARK as a gimmick - but if so, what a remarkable one it turns out to be. Less a narrative than a tour, Sokurov's film still manages some touching moments: doomed Romanov girls frolicking in the halls; the dreamlike last imperial ball of 1913; the curator building his own coffin in a wrecked anteroom during the siege of Leningrad - a collection of moments, perhaps.
.but what moments.
