Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Jorge C — 08 Jul 2008
Tediously extravagant. Sokurov has done what no other has dared to in the past; a one shot feature film. Considering they had one day to shoot this (the museum couldn't stay closed) makes the feat that much more remarkable.
Also one would figure that if you were to make a ONE shot movie you'd make things as simple as possible (the plot is excessively simple) but Sokurov makes some of the most intricate sequences and camera moves.
The amount of extras used is breathtaking (rumored over 3000), can you imagine choreographing 3000 extras with costume changes, lighting adjustments and blocking through an entire museum? Russian Ark really is an astonishing accomplishment.
