Review of Russian Ark (2002) by Mark O — 08 Jul 2010
Everyone mentions how this film was made, in one very real 96 minute unbroken shot. That in itself is very intriguing. But to what purpose? This film would be very less interesting if it were filmed conventionally with edited shots.
True. And even as is, there are moments where my mind floated away. But not always to bad places. The film is a conversation of Russia's great history with very limited peeks at the darker periods of the nation's past.
No, history is too limited a term. Culture as a whole is what the film explores. What does it mean to be from Russia? Is it the language? The art? The music? The film isn't perfect. And at first, I was a little underwhelmed.
But now, the film has sunk in a bit. It's like falling in love. No one is perfect, but look past the flaws and you'll have all the perfection you need.
