Review of Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage (2010) by Steve G — 27 Jun 2010
Despite their prog-rock leanings and my teenage affiliation for that stuff, I never, ever got into Rush. Mainly because they had those crappy lyrics and Geddy Lee's ludicrous vocals. So it was a surprise that I actually enjoyed this extended documentary about the band's career.
Despite their success, they come across as relatively normal guys who kinda 'lucked out'. A huge fan base has kept them going but most mainstream music fans wouldn't recognise any of the trio if them passed in the street.
I know what you're wondering... did this rock doc make me want to investigate the music of Rush any further? Well, age has not made crappy lyrics or ludicrous vocals any more appealing to me, so I'll still leave them to the unfortunate.
Good film though and recommended to anyone with even a passing interest in overblown prog rock Canadian-style.
