Review of Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage (2010) by David S — 24 Sep 2010
Not being a big fan of Rush (I'm kind of neutral overall on their music), I still enjoyed this portrait of the band. All three members are disarmingly normal, jovial, and often humble people with a surprising level of professionalism and talent.
Their story is one of the triumph of music geek credibility and self-direction over marketing and polish. The typical rabid Rush fan will, of course, also enjoy the many concert clips and ample stock footage.
As a documentary work, it could have gone into further depth, more balanced critique, or could have given us more of a view of their studio and music-writing dynamic. Still, we get to see them drunkenly poke fun at each other, deal with personal crises, take negative reviews in stride, and adapt and grow as artists.
