Review of Rush (2013) by Campbell P — 11 Jul 2015
Rush portrays a person's perspective on either side of the spectrum. James Hunt being the care free party man who only races for fame and Niki Lauda who races for dignity. The story follows these racers and their perseverance to win the World Cup in Formula 1 racing.
They go back and forth until Lauda gets a deal with Ferrari and Hunt trails behind. The real life story of these two racers is inspirational and nerve wrecking too. Throughout the movie, people are getting into crashes and you see up close how dangerous this sport really is and it makes for really intense scenes.
I really enjoyed the plot of the story even though I'm not a racing fan in any way, I found it really gripping and fun at the same time. Ron Howard did a really good job making me believe that these two were always at each other and showing how determined they were for the prize.
What made it so interesting is that they both wanted it for different reasons. For James, racing was all for the fame, fortune, and women. For Niki, it was proof to his father that he could be successful without being a part of the family business and proving his dignity.
While Niki may have the more important goal I was split between who I wanted to root for. There's a really good balance between screen time for both the leads and I was convinced either way because I got to know both characters pretty well.
The performances by Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brà 1/4hl made these characters convincing and their relationship was realistic and convincing. It wasn't anything like them screaming at each other and fist fighting.
It was tame and more realistic because they weren't fighting to beat each other, they were fighting for their glory and their love of racing. I thought that a lot of the tension built between Hunt and Lauda was really intense and made for really fun racing scenes.
The way that this film is shot is beautiful, I love the last race with all the rain especially I think it's such a great scene. Both characters actually learn things in the end which I didn't think would happen because for Hunt it was kind of a last second thing.
Lauda learned that being with his wife was more important than achieving his award and Hunt kinda learned that it's important to stay truthful to what you bestow. He still acted like a star and abused his power which was kind of disappointing because what Lauda learned was really emotionally powerful and Hunt never got one.
Rush shows that racing is not all just fun competition, it shows that it can be dangerous, scary, and life threatening. This film was suspenseful, fun, and inspirational. The acting was great, the story was fun, but I didn't find a huge emotional payoff in the end which was kind of disappointing.
B+.
