Review of Rush (2013) by Ian B — 09 Jun 2014
Director Ron Howard takes one of the great rivalries in F1 history and turns it into one of the best movies of the year...and this is coming from someone who doesn't give a crap about racing. Rush is a fantastic character study about two completely different personalities in the sport and how their obsession with each other shaped their careers.
Chris Hemsworth finally proves he can play someone other than Thor, but is upstaged in every scene by Daniel Bruhl, who gives an Oscar-worthy performance. The camerawork is inventive, the script is focused and the racing scenes are extremely intense.
The down side is that the races are so entertaining and Bruhl's performance so captivating that when neither is on screen the movie tends to drag. But if it can keep someone who's not even interested in the sport glued to the screen, the filmmakers have done their job.
Highly recommended.
