Review of Running with Scissors (2006) by Matthew L — 21 Aug 2010
Running w/ Scissors is a complicated film to write a quick review for. It has that quirky comedy feeling, but with a serious case of mania mixed with some bi-polar, which is fitting because the film focuses highly on disorders as function.
The acting was superb, and the situations were ironically, and unnervingly realistic feeling. I have to say that there were many times I personally connected with the film, which doesn't happen very often for me, so it jetted me into the film way more than it probably should have.
If I had to pick one word it would be surreal. Movies such as this (that I feel are realistic accounts of living) have a similar balance between an inspection into monotony or those moments where we feel that we are at the edges of ourselves.
It's a hard feeling to portray in words, but I think the film pushed it forth nicely, and had weird mixes of films like Requiem for a Dream, Loverboy, and Mommy Dearest.
