Review of Running on Empty (2010) by David F — 25 Jul 2013
I wish more movies were made like this one but at least Lumet is still directing films. This a painfully moving drama with exceptional performances (Hirsch and Lahti are always on), earning Phoenix a Supporting Actor nom.
The scene with Lahti and her father (Steven Hill) is simply amazing. It's also a challenging look at how we can't run away from our past, how our actions effect the ones we love and how we often have to decide to let go of the ones we love.
It's ironic that I'm coming back to this movie at this time, since the characters of Arthur and Annie Pope are loosely modeled after Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn of The Weather Underground. After 20 years, this film still resonates to me and remains a very special film.
