Review of Running on Empty (1988) by Steve G — 18 Jun 2011
Further ammunition for my hatred of hippies & hippie ethics. The father was insufferable. But the movie was fantastic. Especially River Phoenix in his best performance. Wonderfully engaging story about liberal hypocrisy.
About time they made one, since pretty much every other hollywood movie is about conservative or religious hypocrisy. Love the musical element too. Phoenix's relationship with Martha Plimpton was so genuine.
High recommendation. And it still is kind of a 60s liberal hippie movie, despite the surprising self-critique.
