Review of Running on Empty (1982) by Brian W — 25 Sep 2010
80's movies re-visited 2 out of 5: This movie, about a family who are constantly on the run from the FBI because the parents once blew up a napalm lab to protest against the Vietnam war, shouldâ??ve been River Phoenixâ??s career turning moment just like "Whatâ??s Eating Gilbert Grape" was for Johnny Deppâ??s.
Although the story sounds political itâ??s not a political movie but about one familyâ??s choices in the past, present and the future and how these choices shape their identity and self-consciousness.
Iâ??ve watched this movies several times over the years and it touches me every time and makes me kinda sad. Phoenix is exceptionally good (he was Oscar-nominated for his role as Danny) Christine Lahti and Judd Hirsch as his parents deliver too.
