Review of Running on Empty (1982) by Luck D K — 04 Jul 2010
"Running On Empty" refers to two criminals on the lam who've reached the end. To complicate things, they have 2 sons, the elder played superbly by the late River Phoenix who was Oscar-nominated for this role. Phoenix is the best thing about this movie; he's the central character so I don't know why he was nominated in the supporting actor category.
Christine Lahti, whatever became of her, is very good at portraying the angst of the parents for a mistake they made decades ago. Martha Plimpton excels as Phoenix's sweetheart. This is a movie that I didn't care for when I saw it for the first time. Now older, I can really appreciate the human dynamics of this drama and give my appreciation to legendary director, Sydney Lumet.
