Review of Runner Runner (2013) by Gina M — 09 Oct 2013
Runner Runner benefits from a solid cast and intriguing premise, but doesn't really go into new heights or territory in this sluggish thriller.
Justin Timberlake plays Richie, a poor Princeton student who is told his gambling affiliate job is over since its causing problems for other students. While doing multiple games of poker online, he loses seventeen grand by a couple of hustlers. After confirming they were cheating, he visits his dad and uses his last remaining dollars to fly to Costa Rica and confront the site's owner, billionaire Ivan Block. (played by a menacing yet charming Ben Affleck).
The movie does have one or two memorable scenes, but ultimately its lacking that oomph or thrill of danger. By the film's end, none of the main characters die, not even the secondary ones. One nameless character and friend of the gaming Commissioner eats it (hehe) but that's it. There's no real sense of danger or excitement.
Gemma Arterton is looking great with her sultry dresses and tanned skin, but doesn't get to do anything except be some exceptional eye candy. Anthony Mackie plays an angry FBI agent who doesn't get to be more than just overzealous.
At a quick 90 minutes, Runner Runner doesn't have a captivating climax and sorts of ends on a slow note. There is also barely any theme to go on, and it feels like the movie could have been fleshed out more. (what's the story behind Block's other partner?) The final result feels like a lazy movie that could have been much better, as this movie squandered a great cast.
