Review of Runaway Bride (1999) by Paul K — 04 Apr 2009
Will Gere and Julia Roberts can be counted on to deliver consistently good performances without a second thought, but what surprised me about this movie were several surprisingly insightful comments about relationships that usually don't show up in movies like this - I felt like I might have found an explanation when director Garry Marshall's name came up in the credits.
Yes, it's just an entertaining romance full of totally impractical and unlikely situations and outcomes, but that's the starting point for all romantic comedies, and a good movie is still a good movie even if it's within the limits of a strictly formula-driven genre.
