Review of Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) by J K — 24 Jul 2010
One of the top 25 war movies ever made and a once-in-a-lifetime pairing of Gable and Lancaster. One of the very few WW2 B&W movies that had an almost noir feel to it. The story itself was what separated this film from the pack.
Being on a submarine duiring WW2 and trying to avoid being destroyed by a Japanese destroyer, the very silence the crew members had to follow to avoid detection was the film's strongpoint. The best films say the most without saying anything.
The crew's facial expressions and emulated emotions are worth a viewing on their own. A great supporting cast that included Don Rickles and Jack Warden. A must-see if you consider yourself a WW2 movie buff, but also strong enough on its own merit as a classic noir.
