Review of Run Lola Run (1998) by Ryan P — 03 Dec 2012
Plot:
''EVERY SECOND OF EVERY DAY YOU'RE FACED WITH A DECISION THAT CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
Lola receives a phone call from her boyfriend Manny. He lost 100,000 DM in a subway train that belongs to a very bad guy. She has 20 minutes to raise this amount and meet Manny. Otherwise, he will rob a store to get the money. Three different alternatives may happen depending on some minor event along Lola's run.''.
Wikipedia: ''The film touches on themes such as free will vs. determinism, the role of chance in people's destinies, and obscure cause-effect relationships.''.
Lovely little gem. I liked its premise of retelling its plot with 3 different alternatives, with each variable representing one of the above themes. A technical masterpiece if not anything else; excellent camera positioning, quick-paced editing, and perfect use of a techno OST to match the multiplex action. Just fantastic storytelling. Franka Potente as Lola gives a sterling performance in the lead. One of the most enjoyable films I've seen in quite a while. Ranked #86 in Empire Magazine's "The 100 Best Films Of World Cinema" in 2010. Highly recommended!
