Review of Run All Night (2015) by Matt C — 23 Aug 2015
Oh my, Liam Neeson, you've really got to play someone else. It takes a lot to oversaturate your own market, but you've done it. At this point, Neeson is a parody of himself and it seems like no tweaking of his character traits will make him fresh or interesting.
Run All Night is not interesting, it just has some interesting visual choices. In fact, almost everything it did made me think about other movies that I'd rather be watching. "Oh, this car chase was way more exciting in Nightcrawler.
" "The subway scene in Skyfall was so much cooler than this one." "Wow, this location is really foggy; I want to watch Insomnia or Foxcatcher again." These were essentially my thoughts throughout the movie--nearly none of them had to do with the movie I was actually watching.
I was never invested, not from the beginning to the end. Even the rather-well-constructed ending is undone by the plot's structure. The film opens in media res and tells the ending, therefore undermining the only good sequence of the movie.
That wouldn't be an issue if the journey was enjoyable or layered more upon its characters through time, but you can predict everything that happens from the first ten minutes. I understand that not everything has to be 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it should at least be good and intriguing.
Run All Night isn't, though--it's just uninteresting from beginning to end and mostly boring. At least it looks nice. If you want to see an action movie, just see Kingsman: The Secret Service again.
I wish I had seen that for the fifth time instead of this. 4.3/10, bad, two thumbs down, below mediocre, etc.
