Review of Run All Night (2015) by Shane B — 03 Jul 2015
I am glad to say Run All Night is a great action film with a very surprising amount of heart and depth that is hard to capture in these types of films. Liam Neeson once again nails the action, but this time he isn't the great guy seen in his previous action hits in this film he plays a father filled with regret and we as an audience can see his struggle to reconnect with his son.
Joel Kinnaman does an impressive job as "Mike Conlon", "Jimmys" son. We get some good dialog between Mike and Jimmy. Mike approaches with a believable amount of caution towards his father.
Ed Harris portrays "Shawn Maguire" a mob boss who is a long time friend of "Jimmys" and he is by far the best antagonist Neeson has come up against in his various action roles.
The direction and cinematography in this film is great and there is an intense feel throughout. My personal favorite part was the restaurant scene where "Shawn" and "Jimmy" confront each other, it is a very important scene and gives us some reasoning behind "Shawn's" future actions.
However Run All Night does have its problems and the hit-man "Andrew Price" is very cartooned and extremely underdeveloped and I would have also like to have seen more of Vincent D'Onofrio's detective "Harding" and his motives.
But for the kind of film Run All Night is. It succeeds in its goals and is throughly entertaining throughout.
