Review of Run All Night (2015) by Sandra C — 19 Aug 2015
Do you ever get the feeling that there's actors out there that get type castes because that role is literally the only role they can play now in their career? Well, I'm afraid that is exactly what is going on with Liam Neeson. Sure, he's one bad ass older gentleman, but literally the last 8 movies he's been in have been somewhat the same type of movie and/or role.
"Run All Night" is definitely no different. Neeson is in the lead here, trying to protect and save his son from an old friend mobster that is trying to kill him because of something he witnessed. You guessed it, they run all night trying to be safe, and kill anyone who gets in their way. Neeson does his normal job here, his son (Joel Kinnaman) does a pretty solid job, the estranged son who loathes his father because he hasn't really been one up until now. The best job here though comes from Ed Harris, who I've always been a huge fan of, especially in the bad guy role. The guy is so charismatic, charming, soul grabbing. At the same time, he's ferocious, terrifying, and has the killer instinct. So if I had to give a nod to an actor in this one, it'd go to Ed.
The plot is fairly simple and straight forward, I've already explained it in about a half a sentence. It doesn't need to be too elaborate for this film, but at the same time, I wouldn't liked to of seen more structure and a twist here or there. I feel like it may be a movie, where if I watched it again, which I probably won't, I might pick up on new things, but then again I doubt it.
Giving it a fairly good score for how straight forward and bland it kind of was, but hell, like I said, Neeson is still badass, and Harris is a great all around actor. 3/5 JD.
