Review of Rumble in the Bronx (1995) by Nyk P — 27 Feb 2011
"Rumble in the Bronx" was a pretty fun martial arts movie. It's pretty much the film that made Jackie Chan famous. Though it's story might be kind of stupid, and the acting might be a little dry, it's not what the film is really about. What it's about is the fantastic and impressive stunts that Chan pulls off throughout the film, and it's amazing choreography and cinematography.
Jackie plays this guy who's come to New York for the first time to stay with his father or uncle or something, I can't really remember. He helps him with the supermarket. But then Chan finds some beef with a local biker gang, and he has to show them her there dealing with. Along the way he meet some girl and her little brother. Yeah like I said the plot is stupid, but the martial arts definitely make up for it.
There's a reason why this film put Chan on the map. He was truly impressive in this movie. I don't know how many bones he broke in the production of the movie, but it must have been a lot. In any event, I commend him highly for it. He's truly an admirable individual, and an entertaining one without a doubt. He was such a bad ass.
So since the martial arts were what the film was all about, that's where all the effort went into. So I don't really have to say anything positive about any other technical aspect. Oh wait I forgot...the cinematography was pretty good. Some of the fight scenes were shot extremely well in my opinion.
Anyway...the movie will have you staring at the screen in amazement during the hand-to-hand combat scenes, and some of the car chases or whatever that Chan was involved in are like unbelievable. Don't watch this movie expecting an amazing story or acting, watch the movie for the talent in the choreography, and how much courage Jackie Chan really has.
