Review of Ruby Sparks (2012) by Ronald W — 06 Apr 2013
I'm really glad that Will Ferrel or Ben Stiller didn't get this script. "Ruby Sparks" is the romantic comedy/drama that a Miranda July would be forced to make if she had to. Full of beautiful shots and thoughtful theatrical scenes, the film takes the audience on an emotional roller coaster, re-living parts of their younger selves.
The absurd premise of the movie, about an author that brings his character to life with every single stroke of the typewriter, draws a parallel from life and love as we know it; The happiness that is the space between the sorrows, the precious that is barely there at the tips of our fingers.
Bordering on cheesiness, but saved by the perfectly casted, Zoe Kazan, the female protagonist (also the author of the movie) and Paul Dano, are the two who make this movie as how it should be. It's the 2012 Eternal Sunshine and the Spotless MInd. I declare it an instant favorite!
