Review of Roxanne (1987) by Christopher C — 05 Mar 2007
This charming 1987 comic masterpiece from director Fred Schepisi is my favorite movie featuring star Steve Martin. Martin's screenplay successfully modernizes Edmond Rostand's 1897 play "Cyrano de Bergerac" where Cyrano (or fireman C.D. Bales) actually gets the girl.
The film features a terrific supporting cast which includes the lovely Daryl Hannah as the object of C.D.'s affection, Shelley Duvall and Fred Williard (who is great as the fellow volunteer fireman who also happens to be the mayor).
A modern love story about a romantic triangle which dissolves into a series of hilarious misadventures featuring mistaken identity and unrequited love is Steve Martin at his best--sharp and funny.
