"Routine Pleasures" is an offbeat cinematic essay wherein filmmaker Jean-Pierre Gorin, having lived in the United States for a few years, is interested in what it means to be American but is worried about the constant change in the landscape.

To that end, he latches onto and becomes enamored of a model railroad club in Southern California, interviewing and following the members in their preparations for their Tuesday night meetings. While becoming immersed in those details, he receives advice from noted film critic Manny Farber.

The lesson here is never lose sight of the small things in life that make it worth living.

This review of Routine Pleasures (1986) was written by on 28 Nov 2012.
