Review of Route Irish (2011) by Lynne N — 12 May 2011
It says something about a movie - and not something positive - when the best actor in the cast is not an actor at all, but a stand-up comedian. John Bishop was surpisingly good in this otherwise mediocre movie.
The acting rarely got beyond passable and, many a time, didn't get past amateurishly awful. The sex scenes were laughably bad pantomime - not quite the gritty realism that Loach was probably going for.
This is the second Loach film I've seen (after 'Ae Fond Kiss') and, based on the evidence so far, I don't think I'm going to rush to watch another. The sad thing is, this is a decent concept and, in the right hands, could have been so much better.
