Review of Roujin Z (1991) by Alex K — 29 May 2012
The guy who made the phenomenal Akira wrote this? It's a pity he didn't direct it too. I found this movie to be pretty bad. The story is weird and nonsensical things happen, such as how the robot is suddenly the old guy's wife, and the climax is extremely anticlimactic.
I thought it was the action before the climax, but the exciting part of the movie never came. The animation is sloppy, and only really picks up at the end of the film, where it finally becomes fluid and also because the robot designs are monstrously complex.
But most of the character designs are creepy and unappealing, and the English voice cast sucks, although that isn't a critique of the actual film, and the badness made the movie a little more interesting.
Yeah, it's original and bizarre, but it is in no way a notable piece of animation.
