Review of Rough Night (2017) by Trae S — 17 Jun 2017
5 female actresses, Scarlett Johansson, Ilana Glazer, Kate McKinnon, Julian Bell, and Zoe Kravitz come together for a bachelorette party. Bachelorette parties are excuses to do blow, talk about dicks, and kill a stripper? I loved the premise of this film, upon watching the trailer. It starts off well by establishing what types of women we are dealing with, but it never goes further than surface level of their characters. The screenplay was written by the writers of Broad City, but the comedic approach isn't the same. We get more of a Hangover Pt. 3 vibe. Expect many of the jokes not to land, because they fall back on female hygiene humor and foot jobs? This film had the opportunity to be darker, smarter, and more thrilling. The scene with the lawyer on the burner phone, should have been a pivotal tool to drive each event that happened. Instead, we get random gags. I love the irony of the bachelor party, where each male (Eric Andre guest star) is drinking wine, and dishing out sound relationship advice. That's truly relatable comedy, but we barely receive that from our ladies.
2/5.
"She's smart and funny, Kyle." -Eric Cartman.
