Review of Rough Night (2017) by Ted W — 11 Jan 2018
The lesser movie. So this is about a group of lady friends who have all grown up to varying degrees since being best friends in college. They all go their separate ways, and the ring leader of the group (Scarlett Johansson) has had a successful run in politics.
She is about to get married and her friends from yesteryear want to put together a wild weekend in Miami before she ties the knot. What could go wrong? It is funny how every so often you get two studios with the same idea and both end up getting greenlit within the same year.
There's Volcano and Dante's Peak, The Illusionist and The Prestige, and now we have Rough Night and Girls Trip. Cutting to the chase, let me tell you: this is the waaaay more irritating movie, no contest.
This is just a movie that commits the biggest cardinal sin in cinema in that it is a comedy that is not funny. This is all stemmed around the fact that there really isn't much of a script to speak of.
You don't even need to have a discerning eye to catch this, you can tell quite easily tell that this movie is almost entirely improvised. 3/5 of the cast doesn't have this ability in their repertoire, especially Johansson who is tasked with leading this show.
I know Ilana Glazer and Kate McKinnon are capable of delivering with less just from what I've seen them in previously, but here, they are playing off of people who aren't good at reciprocating, and they can only do so much.
Even from the jump off, you can tell that this is going to be next to unbearable about five minutes in. I've liked Jillian Bell in the past, but here, she is reduced to a one note joke of being the loud rude girl; she must have only gotten this part because Melissa McCarthy and Rebel Wilson had conflicts and couldn't commit to a shooting schedule.
She is easily the most annoying part in an already grating movie. I know I'm not the target demographic, but even if you're an adult women, I feel like you're going to need several Long Island Iced Teas for this to even stand a chance of not getting on your nerves.
You never at any point believe that these girls would be friends at any point in their lives; why would you keep people in your life that constantly try to push your buttons? Every joke in this goes exactly where you would expect, and Rough Night is seriously annoying and severely unfunny.
