Review of Rough Night (2017) by James R — 02 Dec 2017
A decent comedy/chick flick. Like too many chick flicks this one is pretty damn predictable, but the leads are pretty funny (at least most of them). The film centers around a bachelorette party for a group of girls good friend Jess (Scarlett Johansson).
We have her group of friends which make up Alice (Jillian Bell) the kinda crazy one that is over the top, Blair (Zoe Kravitz) the one that doesn't have much chemistry with everyone, Frankie (Ilana Glazer) the free speech/hippie chick of the group, and then Pippa (Kate McKinnon) Jess' Australian friend that no one knows.
The film centers around them partying it up. It's all fun and games until a tragic event involving a stripper happens. Now the girls are scrambling to find out how to make sure they all make it through the night and don't end up in prison.
So yeah the movie has some funny moments (especially a few involving Jess' fiancee Peter (Paul W. Downs), but after awhile it becomes apparent that a few of the ladies don't fit into the pack too well.
I would say that Pippa and Alice definitely carry a lot fo the scenes. They are really funny and it just works. Frankie I wish was funnier since I know she's hilarious, but she doesn't shine too much in this one.
Jess and Blair are really the straight shooters here and I just never cared too much for their characters. Overall, it's a decent rent because it has some decent laughs. I would definitely say it's predictable though, so don't expect a twist or anything too over the top here.
