Review of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1991) by James P — 29 Jun 2007
I don't know why Tim Roth and Gary Oldman don't make more movies together. Being old pals, they play off of each other so well. This is a fantastic, surreal exploration of the last days of two smaller characters from Hamlet, a play with an already bloated body count.
The play itself flits in and out of the existential bumblings of the title characters. Tom Stoppard's script flows gracefully between high Shakespearean prose and the more colloquial dialogue Rosencrantz and Guildenstern use with each other.
Their game of "Questions" is classic.
