Review of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1991) by That Which Is Malakki — 13 Sep 2008
Have you ever looked at a word, say 'house', and thought that you had never seen those letters so arranged before in your life? Have you ever wondered what your true purpose in life is? Have you ever wondered what happens to the walk on characters in and movie or play after they leave the stage? Have you ever felt that your life was somehow incomplete and that you were simply going through the motions of being who people believe you are? This movie has no answers to any of that.
However it does have a wonderful way of allowing you to examine the unexamined process of life for the understudy. Oldman and Roth have created a more complete pair of characters here than most Shakespearean main characters have ever become.
