Review of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (1991) by Jim C — 17 Nov 2009
The best movie in a Shakespearean setting I have seen. It details two minor characters in Hamlet, filling in the time they are not 'on stage' with antics somewhere between comical and philosophical.
One thing that makes this movie so good is while creatively filling in the unwritten story of the characters, the written parts for the characters are true to the play. My experience has been that people either really like the movie or really dislike it.
I attribute part of that to whether they can see the comedy in the philosophy and the philosophy in the comedy. I hope to catch a theatre performing the play on which it is based, as opposed to the play on which the play the movie is based on is based upon.
Confused yet? If so you will probably not like the movie.
