Review of Rosemary's Baby (1968) by Sean T — 14 Oct 2010
There are a few brief moments of tension, and the movie is well shot, but Rosemary's Baby just didn't come together for me. I think the problem is that a certain scene near the halfway point shows way too much. From then on, we already know what's going on (hell, the Facebook synopsis pretty much gives it away), and the rest of the film is spent watching Mia Farrow not putting two and two together.
I also wasn't too impressed by the acting. Farrow was good at points, but her performance is a bit inconsistent. Also, I am honestly baffled by Ruth Gordon winning an Oscar for her role. Most of the supporting cast hams it up to the point where I assumed that no one was taking the movie seriously. During the "reveal" (if you can really call it that), a few of the characters utter a line that should be terrifying in context. Instead, it comes off as laughable.
