Review of Rosemary's Baby (1968) by Nathaniel R — 17 Jun 2012
Most of this movie was really interesting. Considering the time it was made it really was impressive and had me interested the entire time. The only problem for me was the end. Maybe it's because I'm watching it in 2012, so what may have been shocking in the 60s isn't all that shock or unexpected today.
Basically, it felt like there was no real pay off for watching a film that kept promising a pay off. It was pretty obvious what had happened early in the film... and the ending did nothing more than confirm it.
I feel like a jerk saying people in the 60s couldn't figure it out, but maybe they hadn't been as exposed to movies like this so they didn't see it coming despite how obvious it was. It was definitely great for the time and somewhat pioneered a new genre of horror.
But for a modern audience... it's a bit like watching a film that tells you how it'll end and then expects you to be shocked when it does.
