Review of Rosemary's Baby (1968) by Justin A — 12 Oct 2015
Rosemary's Baby is often considered one of the best horror movies ever. I personally do not quite agree with that assessment. It's very good and I loved it, but I didn't quite love it because of the horror elements.
The horror actually comes off a bit tongue-in-cheek and campy at times. At least, the supernatural horror elements. The stuff with Mia Farrow being manipulated and controlled by those around her is definitely horrifying, but that doesn't quite help it reach the levels of one of the best horror movies ever.
This movie is all about the strange performances and Mia Farrow's downplayed performance and vulnerable character. The ending is one of the best in the genre, even though it isn't quite satisfying for the audience.
It doesn't quite reach Night of the Living Dead for a downer ending, but it's definitely not the happy ending (or maybe it is, depending on how you look at it). The only real complaint I have for this movie is that it's not a top ten (or even top twenty) horror movie.
Top 50 for sure, but I always felt there were better representations of the genre. Still, that minor complaint out of the way, it's still an absolute classic movie.
