Review of Rosemary's Baby (1968) by Whit W — 09 Mar 2013
"Rosemary's Baby" is a film that is unsettling in the distance it keeps between Rosemary and those that she believes love her. Satanic terrors aside, it really tells the tale of a woman alienated from her friends, husband and even her newborn. It's devastatingly depressing not because of its downbeat and off-kilter conclusion, but due to the total separation of Mother and Child.
The film is moody and disturbing but not horrific. The characters are unforgettable and the acting is superb. However, it also plays campy and ends on a rather silly note. The "Hail Satan!" cheers are as giggle-inducing now as they were chilling to theater goers in the late '60s.
